Pitches A, B, C and D are primarily used in the analysis of coal-tar and petroleum pitches, asphalts, heavy bottoms from oil distillation etc. Users are mainly aluminium smelters, pitch producers and oil industry. These samples were carefully selected to provide wide calibration ranges for sulfur and trace elements. Analysts from 11 selected laboratories from U.S.A. and Canada, participated in a round-robin certification of the pitches. Analytical methods used were Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Leco C, H, S analyser, Atomic Absorption (AA), Plasma Techniques (ICP) and Gravimetry.
